Autonomous Legged Intelligence Exhibitting Navigator is the child of an indegenous effort by a group of engineering undergraduates from Chennai to design and manufacture a legged robot. ALIEN was constructed under the guidance of Dr.D. Ramakrishna Naidu, M.D., Artec Sriman Controlls Limited and is perhaps india's first four legged robot.
The motivation to take up a project of this nature is due to the initiation by our guide, Dr. Naidu(DRN). The 16 students( academic ) and 1 non academic that were a part of this project were united by DRN in pursuit of the common goal. The 16 students were intitially a part of smaller projects upon whose completion, joined together to pursue the fabrication of an A.L.I.E.N.
ALIEN, the name given to this robot was decided collectively by the group. The christening was preceeded by the definition of the robot's objective in early August 2001. For three months then on, the group started working independently(smaller groups of 3/4 members) on a feasible solution to the proposed problem, the objective of which was to look at all possible viewpoints to the proposed problem from an unbiased perspective. The group would later collate the independent ideations and form one single plan to be executed. As a result, the group would automatically be exposed to the fallacies in individual ideations and the final result would hopefully be devoid of them.
The pursuit of manufacturing the robot was started on 22nd November 2001. Though intial designs and model implementations were tried out 3 months well in advance, no concrete structre could be precipitated from the resulted discussions. Therefore, a week of collective brainstorming sessions were initiated under DRN's guidance which led to a dramatic speed up of the design process.
The actual manufacturing started in late November and the final product as you may see today, was completed by the 6th February, 2002. Though the principle of ALIEN's motion was successfully demostrated on the 24th January, 2002.
The text presented here describes the theory, working and inferences drawn during the course of fabrication and testing of the robot.
